Goodwins Theory

Godwin's theory states that there are five key aspects to a music video;
  • thought through the beat, this meaning what the audience can gain from the lyrics.
  • Relationships between the song and visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying and contradicting the music.
  • Narrative and performance of the music video
  • Star image, camera shots, who is the center of attention- multiple close ups of the main artist or vocalist.
  • Technical aspects of a music video. Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

“Music videos ignore commonnarrative as they are essentially advertisements As consumers we make  up our own meaning of  a song in our minds. A music video can anchor meaning and gives the record company/ artist a method of anchoring meaning."

  • Vogeurism often plays a large part, especially in relation to females and their representation in the music video.
