Evaluation Q4

Evaluation Q3

Question 3 by megan evans on Scribd

Evaluation Q2

Q2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

My main product and my ancillary tasks link together very effectively; however, they give a contrasting images for the audience to view. I have focused both my video and ancillary tasks mainly on the narrative of the main characters rather than the performance of the band. Within my digi pack the pictures that I have chosen are of the main character mainly. I thought this was a good idea to use these photos because they gave a representation of the indie rock genre and how meaningful the narrative of the music video is. I do believe that the photographs that I am using suit well together as they all come across with the same vibe of Indie. The makeup, costume, props and actors were all kept the same as the ones that I use within my production of the music video.

The main purpose of a magazine poster and digipak is to promote the artist and song. Brand identity helps to create a reputation for the artist and character. I included the character on both my digipak and my magazine advert this allowed for similarity for the target audience and create an understanding so there is no confusion as to what is being advertised. I also included the band within the digipak this allows for the audience to know exactly who they are listening to and to create a brand identity for the band themselves.  Both my digipak and magazine advert include a photo of the main characters lips, this works well as they both relate and therefore link together meaning the target audience wouldn’t question who they are advertising.
These are main information tasks that have been within the media for a long time and are the most effective and common way for an artist or band to get their official single out into the world of the music industry, and making the target audience remember who it is and what type of genre the single is. The theme and layout of the poster and digipak almost certainly come from the ideas that are generated through the video and genre of music, in my case the genre is indie Rock. Within Indie rock the artist doesn’t seem to be placed within the advertising of the tasks as indie rock artists mainly are focused on the more meaningful side to the lyrics and therefore this is the reason I combined my music video into the digipak as the main characters rather than the actual band. However, on the poster the band is shown it, is only there to create the dominant reading for the audience as to who The Claremont’s are, for example, The Arctic Monkeys, although they used an image of a band member they also included the shapes and images that we also see within their music video, this is the main area where I gathered my inspiration from. Our band, focuses a lot on the meaning and feelings of the lyrics and they play an important role with putting across a message of the song to the audience.
When producing my digipak, I wanted to create an image that was appropriate to the lyrics of the song and the theme of the music. I chose the colour scheme of a burnt orange and purple, I felt this was the vibe that is given when producing indie rock footage, I felt these colours would create a contrast between the title ‘Roll The Dice’ which I felt an image of the band logo would be perfect as it is quite simplistic and original and I felt the yellow/orange tones created the indie rock genre. I have chosen to use images of the main character on numerous panels of my digipak so the audience understands that anyone can relate to the music, however, I also included one image of the band this was purely so the audience can clearly see who performs the music.
Another way in which my products link is the genre of my music and the title. The genre is indie rock and this is defined as alternate rock, mainly focuses on the instruments of artists rather than the artist themselves. This meaning that it is more emotion based, focusing on the artist or bands life, this is what I had created within my music video as the bands song is very emotional and creates a relationship with the lyrics and the audience which Godwin’s theory introduces, also helping to identify indie rock as a genre. I have also tried to contrast my digipak and magazine advert from my music video by focusing on the band.

When creating the music video, I wanted to include arrange of different shot types such as close ups, match on action and also different angles such as to make the artist look less superior., this created variation in the video and help to equal out the narrative and performance scenes.

Final Magazine Advert

After feedback, I had decided that this was the final piece that I was going to use for my magazine. I had chose this one as it connoted the corruption within her as she is smoking the cigarette also the lighting and effect has created the same meaningful gloom as my digipak. Including the album songs. linking to the digpak with the same photo.

final digipak

 After taking into consideration my feedback from my peers I had to come up with a final piece that I thought has turned out perfectly the way i wanted. Firstly the changes that I had made to my digipak were to create an effect that would look like one, Where it would all merge together and create a ongoing effect of gloom of some sort. To do this I added a much more dark brown/red town to all the photos to give it the Indie Rock effect. To do this i used photoshop and the colour change tool, I firstly decided to add a dark red tone then highlighted this to create a brighter ruby, then added a brown effect to create the final piece.
I wanted my Magazine and digipak to link, to do this I had to create the same effect, use the same fonts as my digipak, this would then allow the audience to know who the band was through the visuals of repeated images and words, because this is a produced album i decided that i would steer away from the music video and add photos that the bands songs would all relate too

feedback

 For my feedback I showed a group of people my digipak, also included a questionnaire for them to complete, the questions insisted on what the audience think the theme and genre of the digipak and magazine is. The results of this questionnaire were very helpful and allowed me to use the criticism and positives of the feedback to create my final piece of coursework.

Here were a few examples of the edits that i had created for a section of the digi pak, the edit and effects within these images wee also shown to my peers and allowed me to create a tally of what works  best and what the audience would be more drawn too.

In dept magazine draft

Feedback of Editing

In the next editing session, although the editing is overall completed there is always room for improvement. Some feedback that we had been given was, that overall the performance footage is quite static and a little boring, as it is just a image of them playing for 22 seconds. the feedback given was that also we tried to use the ken burns maybe adding more of a variety of shot types such as close ups, zooms, behind the shoulder would allow for more variety and create a more exciting piece of footage.
Also another criticism that we had was the father bit, with the photo in the hallway, the feedback given for this was that it was a bit random as he just walks through the door and starts shouting where as we could add an image of him walking back through the door so therefore Emily can bring Etienne through the house. We will come together soon and proceed to edit these.

Editing day 6

In this editing session we decided to work on the collaboration of adding the shots where the main antagonist characters’ father is acting drunk and disorderly and where he shouts at her whilst she is holding the photo frame of her and her mother. This section was easy as it was just a case of using the trim and crop tool to place and fit the clips together so they would flow. As we had already editing the part where Emily is holding the image of her mother we had this to work with so we could place the father scene perfectly
Another piece that we edited was the scene where Emily and Etienne come together after she had the domestic argument with her boyfriend. This was a case of using the tools such as; trim to create a more realistic looking image rather than it being too long to view. After we had cropped the images I then placed them all together in the correct order so that the narrative can run in time, I also used the blade tool to create a jump cut effect on one piece of footage where they are walking away together, this was because the footage was too long and I thought it would create an effect that would also go to the beat of the music. Overall, I think this edit went well.

Jess then cut and trimmed a few shots for our ending. When she had done as much as she thinks she could have, I looked over it and put my opinion on what I thought would look just as good, adding little tweak’s and more clips to the ending, also I arranged them in an order where I thought would look most effective.

Magazine draft

Firstly for my magazine drafts, I had come up with a couple of ideas and this lead me to ask for feedback of each and what people think is the best image to use.
below is the drafts.

Editing Day 5

In this editing session we decided to edit the two scenes of where Emily the main antagonist character is walking home drunk, and walks into her house to pick up the photo of her ‘absent mother’, then we also decided to edit the scene where she and her boyfriend climb over the school gate and meet up, they are having some sort of domestics and arguing, and Emily then goes to ring the boy from the other night that she met.

When editing the scene where Emily comes home drunk and disorderly, we came to a fault in our filming, we hadn’t noticed that when she first drops the photo of her in a long shot she is stood completely still and once we shot the close up of the picture falling she is stepping backwards. We also filmed the photo being broken on the floor, however, this shot didn’t work particularly well with the others so we had to erase that. However, it took a lot of trial and error to fix this as we tried to crop it and see if the scene would look better without it, but then I came up with the idea that we could blade it to make it jumpier, but look more realistic, I also added a slow motion to it, this creating more of a meaningful emotion as to when she drops the photo fame.

When we editing the scene of her and her boyfriend climbing over the school gate and her dropping the school work to represent her negative attitude towards school. The close ups that Jess had filmed of the book falling were not great due to the weather and the type of shot we were trying to complete, however Jess did get a great shot of the paper blowing away in the wind and when editing I informed jess to use the blade tool as it will make it seem more conventional to an Indie rock, this also helped to fit well with the music, we added a slow motion affect to also represent the papers flying away was to represent her life and her negative passion that she had towards school.  We also had edited the scene of where the main character once met her boyfriend, they go and sit down at a pub, and suddenly start to argue, we included a vast amount of shot types in this scene such as, over the shoulder, match on action, wide shot and a long shot. This allowed us to experiment with the different shots and angles that I had previously filmed. Jess placed these shots together using the blade and crop tool, this worked perfectly. I am happy with how the sessions are going so far.

Filming day 3

We wrote down a secure plan of what we needed to film therefore this would keep us organised when filming. We conducted the filming on the 20th March.

Change of charater

Unfortunately, we had to change the character of the boyfriend, this was due to the original being busy and it therefore slowing the process down for us meaning we would have to rush to get everything done. So we decided to use Laurence, him being already into acting and drama Jess thought he was the perfect match. However, he is represented as a ‘pretty boy’ and this wasn’t the representation that we wanted for this actor however, we made it work and dresses him up in the stereotypical ‘chav’ clothing. This allowed him to fit the role of what we wanted.

Editing day 4

Today we completed the next session of our editing.
When we were editing on day number four we just continued to put together clips of Emily in order to develop more of a narrative structure.
In this editing session we started to place together the scenes where Emily is ringing and getting texts from the boy that she had previously woke up in the bed with the night before. This scene was only meant to be a short period of the music. However, I filmed a vast amount of footage from different angles so we could experiment with our editing skills. I found this slightly easy to complete when editing the footage as I used the crop tools to shorten the shots down to fit in the space that we needed, I also mention to Jess that when Emily has her phone out her lock background was a photo of her in a pretty dress with her friends, I decided to try and crop this out as I thought it would ruin the whole ‘corrupted’ vibe that we wanted, successfully I removed the background therefore this kept the representation of her not caring to how we wanted it.
Also, we edited the scene where she is leaving her house, as well as having previously filmed a lot of footage it allowed us to pick and choose what we best thought would fit where. Jess fitted these scenes together, she used the trim tool, I advised that we added a slow motion to the clip as she is walking out to create a sense of meaning to why she was leaving. This I believe worked very well and we will continue in the next editing session we have on fitting more of the narrative into the video.

Editing day 3

Today we started adding some of the footage that we had taken. We began by editing the start of the narrative where Emily is waking up in bed, this took us quite a long time to sort through the clips that we wanted to use and didn't want too. It was quite complicated as we needed to fit the last clip somehow to zoom into a blank screen which we will be experimenting with next time.
I then tried to fit the scene where Emily is being sick from after her night out,there was many shots, including many different angles and shot types, such as close ups, long shots etc. I placed them together and me and Jess then tired to cut specific clips to the amount of time that we needed it to be. We used the blade tool and crop to create these effects.

When filming we collected a lot more footage than we will need to use. I felt that this would be a good idea as we wouldn't have to go back and re film missing pieces of footage. It also will allow us to create more angles and shot types when editing that specific scene.

Editing Day 2

We decided to come together to do another day of editing our band footage. Once we had got the initial footage of the band to fit the music 'Roll The Dice' we then decided that we would cut the bits of the band performance where the narrative would be so we could just slot it in when we came to it. We also needed to place the close ups and different angles that we had filmed into the footage. Jess tried to overlap a few of the shots but she said that she was finding it difficult to run smoothly with the music. Jess and I will come together tomorrow 3/3/17, and try to make the footage fit to the best that it can, also I am going to add the other footage of the narrative into the scene so it is all together. This may take a lot of trial and error, taking up a lot of time however, it is needed to be as close to match up as possible.
I will experiment with the different close up shots that we filmed to see what is needed.

(Need to take a photo of Ettienne)

looking through the footage

The footage that Jess and I filmed I had decided that I would just do a quick look through to make sure that everything that we needed is there and ready to import into the editing that we have already completed.
Overall, everything that we filmed seems to be the correct clips of what we were aiming for. I had noticed that I had filmed a lot of different takes of each scene that we shot, this will be good as we can decided what looks best, we want the shots to fit with the lyrics. I believe that we have taken a lot of footage that will make it easier for us when placing it with the music.
I am happy with the amount of footage that we had shot, even though we are not going to use all the footage It is a good idea that we had done so many as it means we will not have to go back and re film anything.

Digi pak draft

First of,  I have created a simplistic digipak. this will help me to get an idea of the layout that I am looking for.
The pictures that I have chosen are of the main character and the band, mainly. I thought this was a good idea to use these photos because they gave a representation of the indie rock genre and how meaningful the narrative of the music video is.
I do believe that the photographs that I am using suit well together as they all come across with the same vibe of Indie. The make up, costume, props and actors were all kept the same as the ones that I use within my production of the music video.
This is my digipak before I experimented with different lighting effects and the fonts. Which I will do in my next session.

Filming Journal Day 2

When creating the plan for filming it made it a lot easier to follow and stay organised. It made us to keep on top of the scenes that we needed and allowed us to not miss any out. We made sure that we stuck to the 180-degree rule for majority of the time while we were filming to create a smooth run. We also had used shot reverse shot to show the convocation between Emily and Etienne to create interaction and make it seem more realistic when they are with each other.

We began to film the scenes that only included Emily, we completed these shots in the daylight so these shots were ones such as; when she’s leaving the house to go to school, when she is having the argument with her boyfriend and then she goes off and meets the other boy. When I was filming the shots of Emily I intended that we do a mixture of different shots to get different angles and therefore we would be able to choose which we thought were most effective.

Overall, the filming that we did went the way we wanted it to go, we used a great quality camera which I borrowed off my dad and he gave us an artificial bright light to attach to the camera for additional effect, as we came into some issue where we had to continue to film in the dark, this was due to us not being able to get Etienne until later. We also had to re film the part where Emily is in bed with Etienne, we got a shot of her sneaking through the door to see if anyone was awake and then telling him to come through. This implied that she was more powerful than him and rebellious.

We also completed the filming of the small clips to use at the end of our music video.

Day 2 plan

Today; 01/02/17 - we are going to finish our filming that we were meant to complete couple of Das ago but unfortunately we had some struggle getting everyone together at the same time. As I've said previously in my blog we have decided that we are going to change a few scenes to create more of a relation with the audience. We are going to have Emily and Etienne (a 'boyfriend' ) to dress as how she did for the photos that Jess took of her and we would like Him to be dresses just in his normal clothes as he has quite a quirky personality and this is what we are looking for in the actor.

Music video: Actors

The main actors that we will be using for the production of the music video are Emily as she fit the criteria that we want, she will be represented as the corrupted girl who spins off the rails and has a bit of 'fun'. We will also be using Etienne, he will be playing Emily's 'side' boyfriend, we thought he was a good idea as he is a big fan of the indie rock genre so has a feel of how the actors in different music videos act. He is also Emily's actual boyfriend which will make it more comfortable to film the more intimate scenes.

For the band, we will be using them. This was due to it being there song and therefore they know the vibe of the lyrics, also they have done a few concerts so they will have experience on how to conduct themselves in the performance.

Music video: Props

The props that we intend to include in our music video are of the following;
  • Guitars (bass and electric)
  • Drums
  • A mic- this was needed for the main singer.
These are vital for the band to look like they are giving the performance, the good thing about going to see the band before they performed was that we did have access to their own instruments.

the use of a amplifier for them to plug there instruments in gave the music video more of a realistic, professional indie rock vibe. However, they didn't use it as when the band was playing none of their instruments were on it was mainly there for visual effect. And these props were vital for the production of the narrative to work.

Music video; Make up

I did some research into different existing media music video and what I had gained from this research was that in most Indie Rock videos the girls makeup is minimal. They mostly contained dark eye make up to show the careless natural beauty of the actor. There didn't seem to be much face makeup it was mainly the eye shadows, dark lipsticks or none at all. From this research I decided that this was the look that I was going to give my main actor Emily.

Examples;
  • The Vaccines.
  • The Kooks.
  • Cage The Elephant.

Changes that we have made

Jess and I came together and we had decided that the ending of our music video was too meaningful and we thought that people may have felt upset and deep when watching the video. The overall reading of the music video is that life is good with a little bit of corruption and excitement. We had decided that instead of Emily going to get a pregnancy test and telling her boyfriend that she is having a baby we had decided to change that to her and her boyfriend just having an argument. We will show this to be quite a angry and aggressive fight with them shouting at each other, at the end of the argument Emily will storm away and end up calling a different boy. This other boy is shown in the scene when Emily is walking home from her night out, he will then be in her bed the morning after the night before. The boy come over to her in a dark ally when she is drunk, normally this would imply that he is taking advantage of her in the state that she is in, however the fact that Emily then rings him up could also imply that she is the one who is taking advantage of him and using him. This creates a binary opposites of  empowerment and victim. We had made this the ending as it then shows that Emily is actually more powerful than what she seems at the start of the video where she is drunk and vulnerable. It implies a creation of power and enjoyment from her corruption which links in with the lyric of "where are you gonna get in this world without a little corruption".

Focus group

Me and Jess came together and selected five random people who we wanted  to take part in our focus group- There were a few individuals that participated well and mentioned what they thought were the good parts of our music video plan and they pitched there ideas of what they like to watch in a indie rock music video, we took this information on board and we decided to change the ending of our music video. We asked what they would typically think of when listening to indie rock, some answers were; cigarettes, quirky clothing, dark eye makeup, drugs and alcohol.

Although after the filming of this we got a few disappointing feedback as people felt uncomfortable, we asked questions to try and get them to add more to there answers however this didn't work out. The negative elements of this focus group was that really me and Jess should have planned it more and made people listen to our music video and understand our storyboard before asking them the questions.

Audience Theories

Audience theories.

The Hypodermic Needle Model;
(Marxist) This theory was the attempt to explain how audiences react to media texts. Suggests, the audience are manipulated by what they are seen in the media text, that their behavior can be changed by the media makings.
This audience theory can be applied to my music video linking in with things such as;

Indie rock genre- the Location and setting of the video is typical concert and bedroom, showing the realism in the music video, creating a feel of ‘I can act like this’ from the audience. Typical sequence of narrative, however it follows a set of corruption complications that occur, also this gives it a sense of normality.  It is likely for the audience to copy the main female character Emily’s actions and behavior, the way she acts like a corrupted rebel teenager, instead of taking the opposite action of knowing that its bad and shouldn’t be copied. This theory was proven from the study of The bobo doll, where children saw the violence action happening and them copied the actions of violence towards a doll.
Therefore in our music video we will have to not make the visuals too obvious, for example when passing the drugs over, drinking and skipping school, we will have to make sure that the music video has a specific age warning.

There are specific Male and female roles - male being the weak character leading to the audience seeing the female character being stronger. This is a binary opposite. Strong vs week, the female character Emily is the stronger more empowering character compared to her drunk father figure, stereotyping that he is mentally weak because of the alcohol that he is consuming People may follow these actions of the father and start to drink, however this is just a stereotype.

The uses and gratification model;

Two Step Flow;
This theory founded by Lazarsfeld suggests that the information received does not flow directly from the media text to the audience’s minds, but it is filtered through opinion leaders who communicate to the people that can be influenced.
